Bears Knock Off No. 4 Thunderducks in Conference Opener

Dallas College Brookhaven's Aaron Ovalle had 17 points in the Bears' upset win over NJCAA DIII No. 4 Dallas College Richland in the Dallas Athletic Conference 2022-23 opener.

Dallas College Brookhaven men's basketball team opened up Dallas Athletic Conference play with an 89-87 win over Dallas College Richland Saturday.

Richland entered the game ranked No. 4 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III poll.

The Bears, who trailed 48-43 at halftime, chipped away in the second half for the comeback win. Brookhaven held Richland to 39 points in the second half, and outscored the Thunderducks by seven after the break.

Five players scored in double figures for the Bears. Ryan Nurenberg had 21 points, five rebounds and five assists. Aaron Ovalle had 17 points, five assists and four boards. Andre Mancilla had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jackson Lino had 14 points, six rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal. Curtis Trey Moffett had 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Brookhaven (6-11, 1-0 DAC) shot 59.6 percent from the floor, knocking down 31 of 52 field goals. The Bears were 8 of 20 from three-point range, and sank 19 of 21 free throws.

Nurenberg was 8 of 13 from the field. Mancilla went 6 of 8.

Richland (8-7, 0-1) was 31 of 70 from the field, and 8 of 11 from three-point range. The Thunderducks made 17 of 21 free throws.

Richland's Taven Washington had 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting. Anthony Lockett scored 12 points, and Coco Rose 11. Micah Williams and Jaylen Salsman each had five assists. Ed Trahan had eight points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.

Both teams were credited with 20 assists.

Brookhaven will play at Dallas College North Lake 6 p.m. Wednesday before hosting Dallas College Eastfield 1 p.m. Saturday.

Richland hosts Dallas College Cedar Valley 6 p.m. Wednesday and Dallas College North Lake 1 p.m. Saturday.
